MULA: Shadows of War

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

MULA: Shadows of WarHere are four longer scenarios set in and around the Second World War. Each scenario offers a distinct setting and location though, roughly speaking, each gives players at least a glimpse of the Mediterranean Sea. There is no plausible way (we can see) of linking the scenarios into a campaign, but this is the idea: the situation of war is ideal for one-shot scenarios.

Forma Tadre: “The Music of Erich Zann”

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

After eight years away, Forma Tadre gives us “The Music of Erich Zann”, an album based on the Lovecraft story of the same name.  It will be available January 19th for download from the iTunes store only.

I might have to check this one out.  “The Music of Erich Zann” has always been one of my favorite HPL stories.  Speaking of which, you can also find an excellent reading by Finlay Patterson of Yog-Sothoth.com fame.

Review: The Scarifyers: The Nazad Conspiracy

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Scarifyers: The Nazad ConspiracyIf you’re like me, you like audio dramas of super heroes and horror. You’ll like serious ones, comedic ones, and of course, the always cool sounding British accents. It’ll also tickle your fancy to know that two of the actors, Nicholas Courtney and Terry Molloy played the Doctor Who characters The Brigadier and Davros, respectively.

The Nazad Conspiracy is a light hearted and playful romp through a horrific situation involving horrific creatures, magic, and spirits returning from the dead. Its rather like a Call of Cthulhu game scenario told as a story, actually. If you don’t like constant humor in your tales of magical horror, then this might not be for you. If you like the comedy of a fun Doctor Who episode, then give this one a try.

The only problems I could find was a moment where I thought maybe the sound effects overpowered the mood (but only briefly and quickly forgotten), and that it just wasn’t long enough. When you get caught up in a story, it can go by quickly, and this just seemed over too soon.

It was fun and enjoyable, and well worth the purchase. You can make said purchase for the downloadable mp3 version (with pdf CD booklet and covers) at Lovecraftiana.com, Yog-Sothoth.com’s online web store.

Trail of Cthulhu

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Trail of CthulhuThe Grim Blogger of Grim Reviews (who happens to be kicking my ass with the quality and quantity of Mythos content he posts) has yet more good stuff up on his site! This time its about the GumShoe system based RPG “Trail of Cthulhu” and he’s got all sorts of good comments and links to entertain and inform you about the game.

After having listened to the recorded audio of a sample game over at Yog-Sothoth.com, and then listening to their interview with the guys of Pelgrane Press, I forone am highly intrigued by the game. Heres a little bit of a summarization I remember from the audio. “They wanted to make a game that kept dice rolling when it was fun, but removed dice rolling when it wasn’t”. They’ve come up with a point cost system to remove dice rolling for parts of the game mechanics. You can hear more details in the YSDC interview audio on Yog Radio #27.

Now I just need to find the time and people to play with! Not to mention pre-ordering the game manuals!

Cthulhu Fish

Under Vhoorl’s Shadow has some shots of some awesome Lovecraftian artwork.

Grim Reviews, ever the amazing source for horror and lovecraft news, has news of a new Poe based movie starring Viggo Mortensen and Sylvester Stallone.

And Yog-Sothoth.com, the award winning Lovecraft and Role-playing site, has up a video interview with Mike Mason of The Whisperer and The Kult of Keepers.

Wow!  Thats like three great links!  I could have made this into three different posts spreading three days, but I thought to myself, “What would my readers want?  They should be treated to such goodies!”  So there you go!  The readers have spoken through my thoughts, and I have answered… All two of you will now be happy! :P

The Whisperer uses Yog

The Whisperer, a Call of Cthulhu magazine, is set to come out after a long, long break, but this time pulling from the vast resources of the Yog-Sothoth.com online forums!  I’ll be interested to see how well this approach is going to work.  They’re pulling from an excellent source, so good things are probably in store.
