Mythology in Advertising

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I love asian mythology.  Maybe it has to do with me being half Japanese, or maybe it just has to do with the fact that I grew up with some totally freakin awesome Japanese ghost stories!  Needless to say, I find this Thai commercial for Sylvania light bulbs to be one of my most favorite commercials, ever.

USPS Certified Hat

Monday, June 30th, 2008

For some people, it is a means for delivering important documents to their clients, or to their lawyers. For others, it is a way to share family moments and class photos with the grandparents and other relatives. For some, it is a hat. The U.S. Postal Service document mailer makes a great head cover for those early morning naps in the Boston subway system. Get yours today at your local U.S. Post Office. Don’t be fooled by those plain manilla envelopes found elsewhere. Get an official, high-quality envelope from your nearest Postal Service representative.

Awesome Quote: Cthulhu and the Easter Bunnies

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

While browsing the web for all things Lovecraftian, I came across a quote that any HPL fan just can’t help laughing at… then grinning with wicked delight as they imagine the scene. In describing the problems of “safe” web browsing and protecting your computer on the web, the following was said:

“The first day someone launches a serious attack against Mac OS X, it’s going to be like Cthulhu slaughtering bunnies on Easter morning.”

2008 Goals

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

I’ve been thinking about my life and what I might want to change in it. I think my goals are mostly geared towards more efficient and effective usage of my time.

ComicMy first goal is to spend more time on my comic. Currently, I tend to spend one evening sketching and inking, and maybe one to two more evenings PhotoShopping. Those “evenings” tend to be anywhere from one to three hours in length, so really, I could be doing two or three comics a week. Or I could be spending the whole week to make one really good comic. I know this is something that you, the reader, would probably really like to see. But there is a third option as well. I could just spend less time per comic, (at the cost of quality, of course) and use the extra time for doing fun stuff, like browsing the web.

ReadingFor goal number two, I plan to read a whole lot more. By “a whole lot more”, what I mean is actually starting and finishing reading of stories. With the story compilations I buy, I can knock out a whole story in three days! Thats a whole 200 page compilation in two months! Ten stories a month! Six and two-thirds pages a day! Wow! I don’t know how I read so much as it is! Of course, if I start looking for compilations with shorter stories, I can get my “story read count” up by a factor of two without having to spend any more time reading. Alternately, with the shorter stories, I could just read the same number of stories per month, and use the extra time for stuff like web browsing. Which leads us to the last goal.

YouTubeI probably need to spend less time browsing the web. All of us spend time browsing the web, right? It can be a real time sink. Its estimated that people, on average, waste some amount of work hours, the actual numbers I forget, browsing the web instead of working at work. My goal? Cut back on the amount of time I spend zombied out in front of whatever device I’ve got siphoning the “tubes” to my brain.

I’ve written up an estimate of the amount of time I spend wasted on “browsing”, factoring in the number of devices simultaneously use for browsing.

  • 2 hour - While getting ready for work
  • 1.5 hour - Commute into work (via Cell Phone)
  • 8 hour - Morning work period, pre-lunch
  • 1 hour - During lunch break
  • 8 hour - Afternoon work period
  • 1.5 hour - On the commute home (via Cell Phone)
  • 1 hour - During Dinner
  • 12 hour - After Dinner

RaccoonThats 35 hours of wasted time! I spend more time browsing the web than there are hours in a day?! I’m doing the browsing of two to three people! No wonder I can’t get anything done. I mean, how much Raccoon-Furry-Bondage-Nurse-Tentacle-Porn does one person really need? But, as the old saying goes “The Raccoon-Furry-Bondage-Nurse-Tentacle-Porn isn’t going to browse itself”.

So I guess this means no goals for the new year… Its going to be a good 2008.
