Lovecraft Letters

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Dewey Eyes has up a rather interesting short summary notes of the first 40 pages of “Lord of a Visible World: An Autobiography in Letters”.  From the summary, it looks like the book might be an extremely interesting look at Lovecraft’s life and mind.

p. 11—grandmother dies Jan. 1896. Mother, aunts wear black. He pins bits of bright cloth to their clothes for relief.

HPL has nightmares with strange beings that hurl him through the air and poke him with tridents. He draws them when he wakes up.

More comfortable with adults than with other children.

p. 11—at age 5, quotes Cicero in Latin

p. 12—anxiety; senses the reversal of fortune about to occur. Same thing happened to Dickens, me and others I know

— fewer servants in house
— stables close

“irritable and sensitive”—a Highly Sensitive Person?

Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia - Forward

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Papers Falling from an Attic Window has now posted up part five of the forward to their Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia, which you can fin in hard and trade editions. Just travel the link to PFfaAW and click away!

Heres a sneak peak snippit:

Arkham House went on to publish new Mythos stories by established and new authors. Some hold up Derleth as a defender of the Mythos, but I feel this support may be misplaced. Most Mythos aficionados prize the mythology’s social aspect – by writing and sharing a story, they become part of a grand tradition reaching back to Lovecraft. Derleth would have none of this – he claimed ownership of not only Lovecraft’s stories, but also Lovecraft’s creations. Both assertions were of dubious legality; Derleth only bought the copyrights to some of the stories, and no renewals for them have been found.

You can find all six parts here:

But do check out the rest of the great content on the site. And remember to also check out the Hard and Trade editions available for pre-order!

A city for the dead in the Caucasus mountains.

Necropolis

Town of the dead, North Ossetia, somewhere in Caucasus mountains. A great plague wandered across area of current Ossetia in 16-18th century AD. Clans built houses for sick family members and kept them away there, while providing with food. People died there in slow, alone agony. Once they died, the made place for others. the “houses for dying” are filled with bones.

Pearl Harbor Day

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Pearl HarborToday in history, sixty-six years ago, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by the Japanese with a fast, hard-hitting military raid on military targets.  We were basically caught with our pants down.  That happens in war.

What else happens in war?  People on both sides die.  Usually a whole lot of young men who haven’t quite seen their best years, yet.  Remember the men who fought valiantly and the mothers, wives, children, and loved ones who tried to carry on.  War is hell.

L. Sprague de Camp

Friday, November 30th, 2007

I’ve been really busy.  Have I mentioned that?  Really busy.  As such, my posts tend to suffer from a lack of time to really put any sort of effort into.

With that said, heres a post from GrimReviews about L. Sprague de Camp, early H.P. Lovecraft biographer and fantasist.
