Cthulhu Wiki, The Wiki for the RPG Gamer.

Grim Reviews has more words and links on the subject.  Me?  I’ve been busy busy busy.  One wouldn’t think I could get busier, but it happens.  One more book down, and many reviews need to be made.  Maybe I’ll read the Cthulhu Wiki instead.

Five things D&D begat

Monday, March 10th, 2008

BBC UK has up a list of five things that Dungeons and Dragons begat.  It still makes me mad when I hear of people blaming games (D&D included) for things like teen suicide and violence.  I’d blame the parent who buys the games whose age ratings are over their child’s age.  And then there’s the ignorance angle.  But thats a whole nother debate.  D&D brought us together with fantasy and many sided dice.

Gary Gygax passes on

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Its a sad day for many RPG’ers as the man who co-created Dungeons and Dragons the year before I was born (1974) has passed away.

XKCD: Ultimate Game

When I was a kid, I played many a game of Dungeons and Dragons with my two brothers. None of this fancy Advanced D&D. The good ol’ Basic D&D red book, with the fancy-shmancy Advanced booklet in blue. 3d6 stats… and many a reroll. :P The rules were so simple I was even able to pull it out my ass and write up a rule set and character sheets in the middle of Army Basic Training for my buddies and I to play there. Good stuff. And Dragon Magazine. Also fun stuff. I am sad to say I haven’t touched the game in many years. Role playing is fun, but so is a good session of roll playing.

Gary Gygax’s passing is a sad, sad thing for many a gamer, because he has managed to touch so many lives with the creation of a game. There is probably so much more in today’s world that was affected by Dungeons and Dragons than we even realize. While the game is seen as a nerdy thing to many, I say that there passed a man of greatness. Any game or any thing that can bring so many people together for a fun time, social interaction, and family building can only be a good thing.

Penny Arcade game set for Spring 2008

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

This is a game I’m pretty excited about.  Penny Arcade and Lovecraft; Who could ask for more?  How bout the mind behind “The Secret of Monkey Island”?  Now that should be some good fun!

The game has been on show over the course of the conference and has attracted many fans who want to have a look at the Lovecraft-inspired title which has been developed with the aid of web-personalities Tycho and Gabe, as well as The Secret of Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert.

Cthulhutech

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

What do you get when you combine Lovecraftian horrors and anime mecha technology?  Cthulhu Tech.

Cthulhutech

CthulhuTech  is an innovative storytelling game that started out as a combination of two popular genres. The first was that of cosmic horror, made popular by H. P. Lovecraft and culminating in the modern day with elements of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy  and John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness. The second was that of giant mecha Japanese animation, made popular by such series as Robotech,  Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Rahxephon. But the setting has grown far beyond what it started out to be. CthulhuTech  is now a truly unique hybrid of genres – cosmic horror, anime, post-apocalypse, traditional horror, and science fiction blended together seamlessly.

Found at IO9, although the site was responding extremely sluggishly, so you can also try the Cthulhutech site itself, which also happened to be slow. Well, you got two trys to find more info.

MULA: Shadows of War

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

MULA: Shadows of WarHere are four longer scenarios set in and around the Second World War. Each scenario offers a distinct setting and location though, roughly speaking, each gives players at least a glimpse of the Mediterranean Sea. There is no plausible way (we can see) of linking the scenarios into a campaign, but this is the idea: the situation of war is ideal for one-shot scenarios.
